Monitor Calibration
Do the pictures look either too dark or too bright? It sounds like you need to "calibrate" your monitor. Calibration is a very extensive subject but to determine if your monitor is too bright or dark is a fairly simple deal. To ensure you are viewing the pictures at the correct brightness level check
this.
